Single Mom of 3 Killed in NJ Transit Train Accident: A Family Seeks Justice
On October 14, tragedy struck when Jessica Haley, a 41-year-old single mother of three, was killed in a devastating train accident in Burlington County, New Jersey. While operating a New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) River Line train, her vehicle collided with a tree that had fallen onto the tracks. The crash left Haley dead and 23 passengers injured, though most sustained only minor injuries.
Jessica Haley’s family has since spoken out, claiming that her death could have been prevented. According to her sister Rebecca Haley, who also works as a train conductor on the same River Line, the dangers posed by trees along that section of track had been a concern for years. Train operators had allegedly reported issues with downed trees in the area, even suggesting that track cars be sent ahead to check for debris before passenger trains passed through.
Despite these warnings, the trees were never properly cleared, leaving this stretch of track particularly vulnerable.
Rebecca Haley mentioned that some of the trees were even marked with Xs to signal danger, but no action was taken. Her family's lawyer, Kila Baldwin, announced that they plan to file a lawsuit against NJ Transit, the Southern New Jersey Rail Group, and other entities responsible for maintaining the tracks, accusing them of negligence in not addressing the known hazards that ultimately led to Jessica's death.
Jessica Haley was more than just a train operator; she was a devoted mother to her three young sons, ages 13, 8, and 6. Her family, friends, and community have expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of a woman described as hardworking, kind, and passionate about martial arts, which she shared with her children. A GoFundMe account has been established to support the boys and help cover funeral costs, and it has already raised over $6,000.
As the family prepares for legal action, investigations into the crash continue. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is looking into the circumstances surrounding the accident, including why the tree was not removed and whether NJ Transit had followed proper safety protocols.
It is currently unclear if the tree was already on the track when the train approached or if it fell moments before the crash, offering Jessica Haley no time to react.
Jessica Haley’s death has left many questioning the safety measures in place on public transportation routes. Her family hopes their lawsuit will not only bring justice but also prompt NJ Transit to take stronger precautions to protect both passengers and employees in the future.
As investigations unfold, the community mourns the loss of a dedicated mother and skilled train operator, while also calling for the necessary changes to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
