Hold on to your Stetsons, folks, because it turns out Taylor Sheridan is more than just the mastermind behind Yellowstone. He's a bona fide streaming king, and his success outside the Dutton Ranch is proof that he doesn't need Kevin Costner or those Montana sunsets to keep his empire thriving.
Sheridan's Streaming Sweep: Landman and Tulsa King Dominate
Forget the series finale, folks, because Sheridan's been busy building a streaming dynasty. Landman, his new oil boom drama starring Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore, landed in third place on Luminate's list of 2024's most-watched original streaming shows. And Tulsa King, with Sylvester Stallone as a fish-out-of-water mobster, nabbed the fifth spot.
"I knew he was talented, but this is insane!" my streaming-obsessed neighbor shrieked.
"He's basically ruling Paramount+!"
To put those numbers in perspective, Landman racked up a whopping 9.9 billion minutes watched, while Tulsa King pulled in 8.47 billion. Take that, Netflix!
Beyond Yellowstone: Sheridan's Empire Expands
The best part for Sheridan is that he can easily recreate the success he had in 2024. What does that look like? Many of his shows, including Tulsa King, Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, and Lioness, could easily have more seasons coming.
Landman is set to film season 2 in early 2025, and will continue to prove its success. Paramount+ is keen on renewing Mayor of Kingstown for a fourth season in December 2024. Unfortunately, Lioness season 3 is up in the air, but nonetheless, Sheridan is proving he can create a successful universe all his own.
"I think it's his storytelling," my buddy, a film student, explained over coffee. "He knows how to create characters that people connect with, and he puts them in situations that are both thrilling and emotionally resonant.
"
But What About Yellowstone? The Dutton Saga Continues...
Just because Sheridan's success has expanded beyond Yellowstone doesn't mean he's abandoning the franchise. As the OG show rides off into the sunset (or, you know, gets unceremoniously canceled), the Yellowstone universe will live on through prequels and spinoffs.
The highly anticipated second season of 1923, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, is in post-production and premieres on February 23, 2025.
There is also four other Yellowstone series in the works, including The Madison, 6666, an untitled Yellowstone sequel series with Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, and 1944.
"It's like he's creating his own version of the MCU, but with cowboys and ranches instead of superheroes," my colleague joked. "I'm not complaining!"
The Sheridanverse: A Glimpse into the Future
What does this mean for the future of Taylor Sheridan's career? Simple: the guy is unstoppable.
He's proven that he can create compelling stories that resonate with audiences, whether they're set on a Montana ranch, an Oklahoma oil field, or the streets of Tulsa. And with multiple shows in development, the Sheridanverse is only going to keep growing.
"He is officially his own genre," a TV critic friend declared over text. "The man can do no wrong!" (Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point.
)
So, while Yellowstone may be fading into the sunset, Taylor Sheridan is just getting started. And with his proven track record and a stable of compelling characters, the Sheridanverse is poised to dominate our screens for years to come. Saddle up, folks. It's gonna be a wild ride!
