One Phoenix, One Epic Journey: Conquer Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver at Lightning Speed with Ho-Oh!

Article Summary: Speedrun: Beating Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver with Ho-Oh Only, No Items

This article explores the possibility of completing a speedrun of Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver using only a Ho-Oh without any items. In a speedrun, the primary objective is to complete the game as quickly as possible, disregarding side quests and other optional features.

The author begins by acknowledging that completing the game with just one Pokémon, Ho-Oh, is a considerable challenge due to the diverse types of opponents encountered throughout the game.

However, with careful planning and strategy, it is certainly achievable.

The starting point of the game is New Bark Town, where the player is given a choice between three initial Pokémon. In this speedrun, the author selects Cyndaquil because of its type advantage against the first gym leader. The author names the Cyndaquil "Dragon" and quickly trains it to level 6, ensuring it learns the move Smokescreen.

Next, the journey towards the first gym in Violet City begins.

Along the way, the author catches a Geodude named "Rocky" for its Rock type moves' effectiveness against Flying Pokémon commonly encountered early in the game. The author also captures a Gastly named "Spooky" to provide an additional backup for the upcoming bug-infested route to Violet City.

Upon arrival at the first gym, the author strategically uses Rocky and Cyndaquil to defeat the gym leader's Flying-type Pokémon effortlessly. The author then proceeds to capture a Bellsprout named "Viner" to counter the Gym Leader's Rock-type Pokémon during the visit to Sprout Tower.

Viner is later evolved into a Victreebel.

With the team in Violet City now consisting of Ho-Oh, Cyndaquil, Gastly, Geodude, and Victreebel, the author moves on to Azalea Town. Here, the author secures the HM Flash to enter the Dark Cave and encounters the Slowpoke Well event, which leads to a battle with Team Rocket's Executive Proton.

After defeating Proton, the journey continues towards Goldenrod City, where the author acquires the Coin Case from the Game Corner and receives an Abra named "Tele" via an in-game trade.
