Gypsy Rose Blanchard is a young woman who gained national attention due to her involvement in the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Dee Dee had been portraying Gypsy as severely ill and disabled for years, causing Gypsy to endure unnecessary medical treatments and surgeries. It was later revealed that Gypsy was not actually sick, but had been a victim of her mother's Munchausen by proxy syndrome. Gypsy and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, planned and carried out Dee Dee's murder in 2015.
After the murder, Gypsy and Nicholas were arrested and charged with Dee Dee's death. Gypsy eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The case sparked widespread discussions about Munchausen by proxy syndrome, as well as the ethics of Gypsy's actions in response to her abusive upbringing.
Despite being incarcerated, Gypsy has expressed relief at no longer being under her mother's control and has worked towards rebuilding her life in prison. She has also formed a close relationship with her father, who had been estranged from her due to her mother's manipulation. Gypsy's story has been the subject of a popular HBO documentary series and a fictionalized Hulu series, both of which have shed light on the complexities of her case.
