In the highly-anticipated season three of Bridgerton, stars Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton are back to reprise their roles as Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton. As fans eagerly await the next chapter in the popular Netflix period drama, Coughlan and Newton have opened up about the evolution of their characters over the past three years.

The stars recently sat down with Digital Spy and other press to discuss the growth and development of Penelope and Colin in the upcoming season. Newton shared, "I think what was really fun [about playing] the romantic leads of this year is that you’ve seen these characters for three years so to see us play different versions of Colin and Pen from season one, they felt like children."

Coughlan chimed in, emphasizing the significant changes viewers can expect to see in their characters. "Yeah they’re so different. It’s weird for us, we say all the time that the last thing the fans have really seen is season two, because it feels like a really different show and it’s interesting because they get these glow-ups, aesthetically, but then you realize that they’re still these big nerds."

Additionally, the show's supervising producer Jess Brownell hinted at the impact Penelope's transformation will have on her family dynamics. "In every family, people have their roles and when people step out of those roles, it can throw the family into chaos. Pen is definitely stepping out of her role this year. Stepping out of her citrus colors," Brownell teased.

Showrunner Shonda Rhimes also teased the emotional journey that lies ahead for the characters.
