Nicola Coughlan, the beloved star of Netflix's hit period drama "Bridgerton," is trading her lavish gowns and scandalous gossip for a harrowing new role in the drama-thriller "Love and War." She's set to portray Sarah O'Meara, an Irish woman who must navigate the perilous landscape of war-torn Syria to rescue her abducted daughter.
From Penelope's "Glow Up" to a Mother's Desperate Fight
Coughlan's Penelope Featherington has captured hearts with her wit, intelligence, and quirky sense of style. This season, Penelope embraced a dramatic transformation with a "glow up" that saw her step out of the shadow of her garish fashion choices and into a more confident and self-assured persona.
"It was so much fun to get to do it," Coughlan said earlier this month, referring to Penelope's new look.
"I wouldn't necessarily say that all redheads can't wear citrus because I don't think that's true."
"It's a combination," she added. "It's both that it's neon yellow, it's covered in flowers, I’m wearing a necklace with like 20 butterflies on it, I have a tiara and they have the tightest curls you've ever seen.
"
However, in "Love and War," Coughlan will face a starkly different challenge. The film, based on real events and inspired by Louise Monaghan's book "Stolen: Escape from Syria," depicts a mother's desperate journey to save her child.
Sarah O'Meara, Coughlan's character, travels to Syria in September 2011, a time when the country is embroiled in civil war. Her daughter, abducted by her ex-husband, has been taken back to his home country.
"I am so honored to be playing this role and to tell the story of Louise Monaghan's incredible bravery," Coughlan said in a statement.
A Heartbreaking Story of Love and Loss
"Love and War" promises to be a gripping and emotionally charged film. Sarah faces a formidable challenge, not only trying to survive a war-torn country, but also to outwit her abusive ex-husband, who is also the man she once loved.
The film's director, Lisa Mulcahy, who recently worked on the BBC drama "The Tourist," is excited to work with Coughlan. "I am so thrilled that Nicola Coughlan has come on board 'Love and War'," she said. "She's a wonderful, versatile actress and a lovely human, and I cannot wait to get together on this film, which I feel so passionately about."
Louise Monaghan, whose story inspired the film, is equally enthusiastic about Coughlan's casting.
"I am absolutely delighted to hear that the fantastically talented Derry Girls and Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan is excited to take on my role and bring my story of perseverance and heartbreak to the big screen," she shared.
From "Bridgerton" to the Big Screen
Coughlan's shift to a more intense and serious role demonstrates her versatility as an actress.
She's proven she can effortlessly embrace comedic roles, like her unforgettable portrayal of Clare Devlin in "Derry Girls," as well as dramatic roles.
With "Love and War," she's set to tackle a challenging and emotionally complex story that will undoubtedly showcase her talent and range.
Fans eagerly anticipate her performance, while the industry is buzzing with anticipation for what promises to be a gripping and thought-provoking film.
"Love and War" is set to be a departure from the romantic escapades of "Bridgerton," but one that promises to showcase Coughlan's exceptional talent and leave a lasting impact on audiences.
